PRO-LIFE DECEPTIONS
Though Obama has been an unwavering backer of abortion rights throughout his years in politics—he opposed even the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act as a state senator—CFO says that by the standards of “Catholic Social Teaching,” Obama is technically “pro-life” because he “has spent his entire career striving for the common good.” Specifically, CFO praises the President for supporting “health care programs that will cover all Americans, a living wage for working families, and solutions that allow distressed families to stay in their homes.” Moreover, CFO reasons that Obama’s presidency will ultimately reduce the number of abortions “by promoting health care for pregnant women and better infant care, day care and job training.”

Is Barack Obama Really Pro-Life?
The answer is “yes.” Looking through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching, Senator Obama has spent his entire career striving for the common good. He supports health care programs that will cover all Americans, a living wage for working families, and solutions that allow distressed families to stay in their homes. And rather than trying to overturn Roe v. Wade, an ineffective strategy for 40 years, Senator Obama will reduce abortions. How? By promoting health care for pregnant women and better infant care, day care and job training. In fact, data has shown that social and education programs actually reduce abortions.

In last week’s Sentinel article, Cato was paraphrased as follows:
“In addition to the many Catholic programs . . . the church has an obligation to advocate for government aid.
“If society can remove financial pressures, that will end the reason cited for 7 in 10 abortions.”

If you are never born, it doesn’t matter what social programs the government provides. If you don’t make the protection of the unborn the first priority of a “pro-life” program, then you are nothing more than a clanging bell. To paraphrase someone else, “I know pro-lifers and Matt Cato, you are no pro-lifer.
