For far too long there has been an ominous silence across America on arguably the most controversial and devastating issue of the day — birth control. As so often we see in history, oppression gives rise to courage and, no question, courage is exactly what we are seeing in Church leaders and layman alike in response to the Obama administration’s recent birth control mandate and more recent unacceptable modifications.

The Birth Control Mandate has forced the issue of contraception to move from being the elephant in the room to center stage. Perhaps in time we will see that it was a hidden blessing for our country. For years pro-life organizations refused to discuss or take on this topic despite the fact that free access to birth control increases the number of surgical abortions[1][2]. Most people repeat over and over that birth control decreases the number of abortions. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, today for every child born in the US, there are an estimated 2 children killed in the womb from both surgical and chemical, abortifacient drug abortions [3]. What isn’t being talked about is that the new mandate also pre-disposes women to serious long term and permanent health problems. In conjunction with the defense of both religious liberty and the spiritual well-being of women, we must also refute the absurd and deceptive statement that “women are healthier on birth control.”

Thus, millions of Catholics would be required to provide and/or participate in insurance plans with free birth control coverage. It also appears it would force Catholic health care institutions to either provide the coverage, or cease employing and serving non-Catholics.

The HHS ruling requires provision of free Group 1 carcinogens for women in the form of oral contraceptives. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, an arm of the World Health Organization, lists estrogen-progestogen oral contraceptives among 106 other deadly substances like arsenic, asbestos, and tobacco on its most dangerous list of substances-those classified as “carcinogenic to humans.”  [See Estrogen-Progesterone combination.]

HHS must accept public comments on its ruling over the next 60 days. It is critical that people of good will contact HHS and register their disgust with this mandate that we must pay for other people’s birth control-against morality, against our will, and against our religious convictions.

Please go to our action center today and let HHS and other government agencies involved know that this rule is unacceptable and must be repealed.

The Oregon Public Health Division has launched an aggressive marketing campaign that is designed toward increasing the use of contraceptives by poor girls and women.

Update 8/10/11 — It’s important to be aware that the Oregon Family Planning Program is funded by the U.S. DHHS Office of Population Affairs.  This is true for any state.  Keyword:  “population.”

The sign on the MAX train says, “Turn Misconception Into Contraception You Can Trust at ccare.oregon.gov .  Portland’s light rail have had these ads for months.  Now we finally know they’re from the Public Health Division.

Purpose:  to increase awareness of health clinics – including Planned Parenthood – that offer free contraceptives to those who qualify under Medicaid.  Planned Parenthood is a partner of this program.

“Get free birth control that works for you.”

They use scare tactics, below,  that are bald-faced lies, misleading, and inaccurate about pregnancy.  Pregnancy is not a disease.

“No method of contraception

has a higher risk of death

than pregnancy.”

Say what?!

They have reinvented oral contraceptives as a harmless candy:

Like every sex ed program, this one wants youth to delay pregnancy . . . but not delay sexual activities.

The program minimizes health risks of The Pill:

Advantages:
Birth control pills are very easy to use. They work very well if they are used the right way. Periods may be more regular, lighter and less painful. The pill can help clear up acne. Women who have used birth control pills are at lower risk of ovarian, uterine and colorectal cancer later in life.

Risks:
Health risks increase in smokers’ age 35 or older. Birth control pills do not protect you from STDs and HIV/AIDS.

BACKGROUND

The DHS Oregon Family Planning Division launched a “Family Planning EXPANSION Project” or FPEP.  It’s new name is Contraceptive Care or CCare.

The Oregon Contraceptive Care (CCare) Social Marketing Campaign launched a statewide advertising and promotion campaign including outdoor media ads. The campaign is intended to increase awareness of the availability of free or low-cost family planning services for Oregonians with incomes below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level.

CCare is the result of “What Women Are Saying” (pdf) , a ‘market study’ for developing a strategic marketing plan.  Incredibly, on the one hand, the study says women misused oral contraceptives and got pregnant; or the “women” (many interviewees were teenagers at the time) were uncomfortable with the side effects.  Yet, the DHS moved forward with this aggressive marketing of dangerous steroidal hormone products!

Men would NEVER take these poisonous pills!

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 20, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – After the Institute of Medicine (IOM) this week publicly backed government-mandated birth control coverage, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is standing in the breach against what would prove a massive victory for abortion giant Planned Parenthood.

The birth control question has sparked a rare spectacle as the two most influential lobbies on sexual health forcefully butt heads over an issue many other interest groups consider secondary.

“Pregnancy is not a disease, and fertility is not a pathological condition to be suppressed by any means technically possible,” said Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Tuesday.

Like other conservative leaders, the USCCB pro-life chairman noted that the mandate would violate the conscience rights of Americans morally opposed to birth control, and objected to coverage of “emergency contraception” such as ella, a chemical functionally identical to the abortion drug RU-486.

But the cardinal’s challenge did not stop there: DiNardo noted that the IOM report was so radical as to have indicated interest in recommending full abortion coverage as well. The report stated that, “despite the health and well-being benefits to some women,” abortion was outside of the project’s scope given federal legal restrictions.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) has dispatched a “Truth Team” to rally opposition to the Pence Amendment (H.R. 1, sec. 4013), a measure to stop federal funding of PPFA and its 102 affiliates. But not everything said by PPFA officials and sympathetic media has been the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

In the interest of an informed debate about taxpayer funding of PPFA, a few omissions and potentially misleading statements are addressed below [in this article].

All this adds up to a revolving door of customers, constantly returning for the pricier services: emergency contraception; pregnancy tests; STD testing and treatment, including Pap tests for cervical cancer (100 percent of which is caused by certain persistent strains of the sexually transmitted human papilloma virus [HPV]), diagnostic colposcopies and LOOP/LEEP procedures; cryotherapy; HIV testing; and, of course, the big money-maker, abortions.

Why haven’t supporters of PPFA funding in Congress and the press noticed that something is amiss?  Here is an organization that offers contraception (35 percent of 2009 services)[16] for “safe sex,” yet also reports that 35 percent of its services deal with the failure of “safe sex” to protect against STDs (testing and treatment), and 11 percent of clients undergo abortions. Is it not likely that some of the same clients going to Planned Parenthood for contraception are returning for these other services when PPFA and contraception fail them? After all, 54 percent of women seeking abortions report they were using contraceptives in the month they became pregnant (see Table 61, p.98).

Steve Ertelt.  Oct. 26, 2010 – The president of Planned Parenthood appeared on the Bill Press radio show today with an unconventional way for the government to save money.

By sending more taxpayer dollars to the abortion business to pay for birth control, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards contends the government would save money in the long run because fewer people would be born.

Presumably, Richards believes the more people who are born the more people will need the support of government programs and services — ignoring the contribution people make to society.

“I think it’s important, Bill, to understand that unlike some other issues of cost, birth control is one of those issues that actually saves the government money,” said Richards, according to Lifesite.  “So an investment in covering birth control actually in the long run is a huge cost savings because women don’t have children that they weren’t planning on having and all the sort of attendant cost for unplanned pregnancy.”

“So we actually feel that covering birth control is not only it’s the right thing to do for women, it’s good for women it’s good for their health care, but it’s frankly good public policy,” Richards added.

The abortion business president appeared on the program to tout its campaign to lobby the Obama administration to call birth control “preventative care” and qualify itself for millions more in taxpayer funds from the federal government.

The demographic sophisticates who read this column know that the population bomb has fizzled, that the world’s population will never double again, and that birthrates are falling faster and farther than anyone imagined a half century ago.

But they also know that there are still pockets of moderately high fertility in the world, including a number of Muslim countries, and some wonder if such places could be breeding grounds (forgive the expression) for Islamic terrorism.  I know they wonder, because every time I give a population talk someone in the audience raises the question of whether Islamic fertility contributes to Islamic fanaticism.

They are not alone.  Many security experts, like Clinton’s Deputy National Security Advisor Samuel Huntington, have long believed that “excessive” population growth in Muslim countries is a national security threat to the West.  They argue that large cohorts of young people radicalize their societies, contribute to civil unrest and cross-border conflicts and, most importantly for us, provide an endless supply of new recruits for terrorist training camps.

Raymond de Souza, the Program Director for Portuguese-speaking countries for Human Life International told an audience of the world’s pro-life and pro-family leaders that “Europe … is being culturally Islamized.”

The cause underlying this “silent Jihad,” he said, is the “most crucial aspect” of Europe’s de-Christianization – de-population. “Europeans do not even replace their countries populations.”

“As one Moslem mullah said to an Anglican priest in London, ‘By the end of this century, all great English Cathedrals will be mosques. Why? Because we have children, and you don’t’.

“Contraception promised a freedom without responsibility, abortion promises the right to do one’s own thing with one’s own body, homosexual marriage promises respect for different orientations … result: the end of civilization as we knew it.”

De-Christianization, he said, is not a new phenomenon, but had its start “centuries ago” with the social, economic and philosophical upheavals that resulted in the Protestant Reformation.

De Souza, a professional Catholic apologist, said bluntly that the solution is the “reunification of all baptized Christians under ‘one Lord, one faith, one baptism’ in the one Church of God, the pillar and mainstay of the truth.”
