Although critics of Nathanson’s conversion were  perplexed as to how a former atheist Jew became of the the most prominent Catholic pro-life advocates, Fr. McCloskey – who has aided in numerous conversions – said he wasn’t surprised.

“My experience in dealing with Jewish people whom I love dearly is that, the great majority of them, if they want to become Christian, they become Catholic.”

Fr. McCloskey added: “I think his conversion from atheism to Catholicism will be seen as a real turning point in our history.”

How did Gosnell get away with such horrors for decades on end? The grand jury states that several Pennsylvania agencies share the blame.

First, the State Health Department stopped inspecting abortion facilities 15 years ago following the election of Governor Tom Ridge. As Brad Mattes has noted, “The politics of a pro-abortion governor put an end to inspections. Abortion mills got a free pass.”

Even a cursory inspection would have revealed that Gosnell’s own patient records contained enough evidence to convict him of performing illegal late-term abortions. But nobody bothered to check.

Second, the Department of State ignored dozens of complaints from women, relatives, and former employees about Gosnell’s behavior. The department could not bring itself to take action even when a whistle blower—a former employee of Gosnell—came to it and “laid out the whole scope of his operation.”

Gosnell should have been stripped of his license to practice medicine years ago. Instead he was allowed to continue to kill babies and mutilate women.

Third, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health failed to enforce its own regulations. The department knew that he was in violation of local health regulations. They knew that he had no medical waste plan. They could hardly not have known, since one of Gosnell’s own employees complained to them that aborted babies were being stored in the same refrigerator that employees used to store their lunches.

They could have shut down Gosnell’s mill for any one of a number of violations. Instead they turned a blind eye.

Fourth, the local hospitals did not report—as legally required—the large number of complications that followed from Gosnell’s botched abortions. Local emergency room personnel had seen it all: patients with torn uteruses and perforated intestines; patients overdosed on pain medication; patients with baby body parts still inside of them.

But they protected Gosnell—and thus failed to protect his patients.

The grand jury report also faults the National Abortion Federation (NAF), whose representative described the small brick building on the corner of 38th and Lancaster in Pennsylvania as the worst facility she had ever seen. Yet she did nothing and told no one, confirming the suspicions of pro-lifers that the abortion industry is incapable of policing itself. To put it bluntly, if you are willing to kill babies for profit, what won’t you do?

IN PLAIN ENGLISH — We at Pro-Life Action of Oregon have waited for the day when the pro-abortion activists will just speak in plain English.  We’ve known all along that the goal of Planned Parenthood and its founder, Margaret Sanger, and her grandson, Alexander Sanger, is population control.  It is also known as soft eugenics.  Reminder:  we vehemently disagree that birth control and abortion — “reproductive rights” of the radical feminists — constitute “health care” for women and their unborn children.

Steve Ertelt.  Oct. 26, 2010 – The president of Planned Parenthood appeared on the Bill Press radio show today with an unconventional way for the government to save money.

By sending more taxpayer dollars to the abortion business to pay for birth control, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards contends the government would save money in the long run because fewer people would be born.

Presumably, Richards believes the more people who are born the more people will need the support of government programs and services — ignoring the contribution people make to society.

“I think it’s important, Bill, to understand that unlike some other issues of cost, birth control is one of those issues that actually saves the government money,” said Richards, according to Lifesite.  “So an investment in covering birth control actually in the long run is a huge cost savings because women don’t have children that they weren’t planning on having and all the sort of attendant cost for unplanned pregnancy.”

“So we actually feel that covering birth control is not only it’s the right thing to do for women, it’s good for women it’s good for their health care, but it’s frankly good public policy,” Richards added.

The abortion business president appeared on the program to tout its campaign to lobby the Obama administration to call birth control “preventative care” and qualify itself for millions more in taxpayer funds from the federal government.

The demographic sophisticates who read this column know that the population bomb has fizzled, that the world’s population will never double again, and that birthrates are falling faster and farther than anyone imagined a half century ago.

But they also know that there are still pockets of moderately high fertility in the world, including a number of Muslim countries, and some wonder if such places could be breeding grounds (forgive the expression) for Islamic terrorism.  I know they wonder, because every time I give a population talk someone in the audience raises the question of whether Islamic fertility contributes to Islamic fanaticism.

They are not alone.  Many security experts, like Clinton’s Deputy National Security Advisor Samuel Huntington, have long believed that “excessive” population growth in Muslim countries is a national security threat to the West.  They argue that large cohorts of young people radicalize their societies, contribute to civil unrest and cross-border conflicts and, most importantly for us, provide an endless supply of new recruits for terrorist training camps.

ROME, October 12, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The de-Christianization of Europe, the “removal of Christian principles and institutions from the daily life of a country,” has created a religious and social vacuum that is being filled by Islam, a prominent U.S. Catholic speaker said on Thursday. Raymond de Souza, the Program Director for Portuguese-speaking countries for Human Life International told an audience of the world’s pro-life and pro-family leaders that “Europe … is being culturally Islamized.”

The cause underlying this “silent Jihad,” he said, is the “most crucial aspect” of Europe’s de-Christianization – de-population. “Europeans do not even replace their countries populations.”

“As one Moslem mullah said to an Anglican priest in London, ‘By the end of this century, all great English Cathedrals will be mosques. Why? Because we have children, and you don’t’.

“Contraception promised a freedom without responsibility, abortion promises the right to do one’s own thing with one’s own body, homosexual marriage promises respect for different orientations … result: the end of civilization as we knew it.”

De-Christianization, he said, is not a new phenomenon, but had its start “centuries ago” with the social, economic and philosophical upheavals that resulted in the Protestant Reformation.

De Souza, a professional Catholic apologist, said bluntly that the solution is the “reunification of all baptized Christians under ‘one Lord, one faith, one baptism’ in the one Church of God, the pillar and mainstay of the truth.”

Local CCHD Pulls Money from ‘Street Roots’ Paper

Pro-Life Action of Oregon is gratified that people of conscience will no longer be donating to the homeless newspaper, Street Roots.  The paper publishes a guidebook of community resources.  Planned Parenthood is one of those resources, under ‘health care.’

Faced with losing $5,000, the paper opted to keep its Planned Parenthood listing, which includes street maps to its locations.  Now that is dedication to the Culture of Death if we ever saw it!

Street Roots’ action, therefore, is immoral!  They prefer to be “politically correct,”  siding with the Abortion Lobby rather than with Catholic social teachings which compel Catholics to feed and clothe the poor!  This is where the Left is abandoning the poor!

We thank Matt Cato, director of the Respect Life Office, for working on this.

Pro-lifers in Oregon will continue to work to turn the tide in favor of the Culture of Life and against those who support the largest abortion chain in the country.

We look forward to the day when Street Roots removes their promotion of Planned Parenthood from their guidebook.  It’s the simplest solution.  If they want Catholics in Oregon to donate they must disengage from the Culture of Death.

On January 29, the Catholic Mobilizing Network to End the Death Penalty (CMN) was launched. According to its executive director, Karen Clifton, the CMN was created “with the encouragement of the USCCB.”

. . . there’s no avoiding the fact that political arguments about the death penalty are going to play a role in the pro-life debate.

The “seamless garment” argument used by Clifton, of course, raises questions about what those connected with the Catholic Mobilizing Network will be saying about the pro-life position of politicians. As everyone knows too well, this version of Catholic social teaching has been used for more than four decades to provide cover for Catholic politicians who do not oppose abortion.

The stated purpose of Clifton’s organization is to “end the death penalty” by educating “the lay community through our courses on the Church’s teachings on the death penalty” and facilitating “respectful and informed discourse within the Catholic community and the community at large.”

These are all admirable goals, but the obvious caveat is how the effort of CMN will result in applying the pro-life label to politicians who support abortion but oppose the death penalty.

This kind of misapplied moral equivalency was the hallmark of the Catholic effort for Obama during the campaign.

Any arguments about the sanctity of life, after all, make no sense if they don’t arise from the obligation of protecting the not-yet-born.
